Exploratory Visual Analysis of Transcripts
Transcripts are central to qualitative research, yet researchers continue to highlight the need for more dynamic and interactive ways to engage with them. This project is a collaborative effort to develop innovative visualization methods to enliven the analysis and experience of transcripts. The figure below is a screenshot from Transcript Explorer, an open-source visualization tool that offers interactive, coordinated views of three visualization techniques linked to video data: (A) Turn Chart, (B) Distribution Diagram, and (C) Contribution Cloud. The example shown uses a publicly available transcript and video from a 2-minute kindergarten classroom activity. Learn more at https://www.transcriptexplorer.org

The 2nd figure is a Transcript Explorer screenshot of a Turn Chart using transcript from the frst 2020 presidential debate between Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and moderator Chris Wallace. This figure reveals several key insights such as: the amount of talk and the number of conversational turns from each speaker can be quickly compared. For instance, the moderator contributes significantly more turns than one might expect. A closer look at the Turn Chart shows that many of the moderator’s longer turns introduce new topics, often initiating three-part sequences: the moderator poses a question, a designated speaker responds, and a third speaker follows up. In contrast, shorter turns that occur in rapid succession across all speakers signal moments of overlapping talk, where the moderator and candidates compete for the conversational floor. As the figure shows, these moments can be examined more closely by clicking to interact with video of the debate.
